Justine Lindsay makes history becoming the first openly trans NFL cheerleader
29-year-old cheerleader Justine Lindsay has become the first out trans member of an NFL cheerleading squad, the Topcats, who cheer for the Carolina Panthers.
Justine had kept her trans status a secret, even from her best friend until she posted the news of her new position on Instagram, coming out at the same time. She said: “Cats Out the Bag you are looking at the newest member of the Carolina Panthers TopCats Cheerleader’s @topcats as the first Transgender female.”
In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Lindsay said: “I was so scared, there’s just some things you can’t post. I just felt like when I posted it, whatever reaction I get from everyone, it does not matter. And then my phone started blowing up.”
The director of the Topcats, Chandalae Lanouette, said: “My goal is to create a team of individuals that are absolute fire on the field but are incredible human beings in the locker room, good friends, good people, and at the end of the day, you have to walk through the door first to get to that spot.”
Lanouette also noted that Lindsay had disclosed her trans status in her application but she had been adamant that it was her talent and not the fact that she would be making history that landed her a coveted place in the Topcats.
A huge congratulations to Justine for living her best life and her truth, once again moving the dial for trans people all over the world at a time when things seem to be more difficult than ever.
