Kate Bush hits Number 1 in the UK breaking 3 records – including Cher’s – who responds on Twitter
Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill has hit the top spot in the UK Charts, breaking three records in the process.
A few weeks ago we reported on the resurgence of one of Kate Bush’s most iconic songs thanks to it featuring in the fourth series of Netflix’s horror/fantasy behemoth Stranger Things. Well rather than just being flash in the pan, the song has taken on a life of its own and unseated Harry Styles As It Was from the number 1 spot in the UK and various other countries around the world.
So what are these records that she’s smashed? First up, Kate now holds the record the longest-ever gap between Number 1 singles in Official Chart history with a whopping 44 years between her 1978 smash Wuthering Heights and 2022’s Running Up That Hill.
Next up Kate now also holds the record of longest time taken for a single to reach Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart. Running Up That Hill first entered the chart in August 1985 and has taken 37 years to hit the top, beating Last Christmas by Wham! which hit Number 1 36 years after its release.
Oh but that’s not all, Kate has also smashed the record for the oldest female artist ever to score a Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart. At a month shy of 64 years old, she replaces Cher who was 52 when Believe was Number 1 back in 1998. And Cher had a little something to say about it, tweeting:
Records Are Meant 2 Be Broken‼️Remember Back In The Day,When Women Had SHORT SELL BY DATES⁉️We Had 2 Fight Our Way Through The Testosterone Curtain,& We Did it So The Girls Who Came After Us Could Sing As Long As They Want To.
With Mega Respect

Praise indeed. Running Up That Hill has been consistently Number 1 in the worldwide streams on Spotify this last week with 57 MILLION plays and TikTok has registered over half a billion uses of the track in the same time period. Basically due the integral and emotional use of the song in Stranger Things, it has resonated with a new generation of fans and Kate herself couldn’t be more pleased, saying in a statement on her website:
“The Duffer Brothers have created four extraordinary series of Stranger Things in which the child actors have grown into young adults. In this latest series the characters are facing many of the same challenges that exist in reality right now. I believe the Duffer Brothers have touched people’s hearts in a special way, at a time that’s incredibly difficult for everyone, especially younger people.
By featuring Running Up That Hill in such a positive light – as a talisman for Max (one of the main female characters) – the song has been brought into the emotional arena of her story. Fear, conflict and the power of love are all around her and her friends.
I salute the Duffer Brothers for their courage – taking this new series into a much more adult and darker place. I want to thank them so much for bringing the song into so many people’s lives.
I’m overwhelmed by the scale of affection and support the song is receiving and it’s all happening really fast, as if it’s being driven along by a kind of elemental force.
I have to admit I feel really moved by it all.
Thank you so very much for making the song a No 1 in such an unexpected way.
Running Up That Hill is currently Number 4 in the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and also top of the charts in Australia, Austria, Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland and Sweden.
