UK Government throw trans people under the bus in shambolic conversion therapy double U-turn
Years after then Prime Minister Teresa May promised to end all conversion therapy in England and Wales, the UK Government have fallen victim to the religious and gender critical lobbies by first saying there would be NO ban after all but THEN saying there would but it wouldn’t include transgender people. Brilliant.
Yep, so that means if you happen to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, you can still pray that right away with your local vicar and know you’re in safe hands. Phew, thanks Boris!
Bizarrely, on Thursday night it was leaked to a British TV network that the ban had been scrapped altogether (see ITV report below), thereby rolling back on things two Prime Ministers and THE QUEEN had said already.
The announcement that ministers would ‘explore non-legislative routes to stop the practice’ was blasted by LGBT groups and MPs from both sides so they changed tack again and said there WOULD be a ban but only for gay, lesbian and bisexual people. For trans or non-binary, conversion is still fair game.
A senior government source told the BBC the ban will feature in the next Queen’s Speech (again). The new legislation will mean therapy to attempt to change peoples’ sexuality will be illegal but, but any therapy used to change someone’s gender identity will not.
The deputy director at The Christian Institute, Simon Calvert, said the double U-turn was disappointing after after the government made the “sensible” first decision to ditch the ban. He declared that the government had now “caved in to people who see this law as a way of punishing evangelicals for their beliefs about sexuality”. Wait, a religious leader looking to use the law as a cover for surreptitious abuse? Funny that. Keep your mitts out of our minds with your poisonous positions, mate.
This really is an out and out shit show of the first degree. While it is some comfort that the ban has not been scrapped but trans and gender non-conforming people are TWICE as likely to receive unsolicited conversion therapy meaning that the most vulnerable are ONCE AGAIN left tot he wolves in priest’s clothing.
complete fuck up devastating decision comes JUST as it was revealed that almost a third of LGBTQ+ people in the UK are victim’s of abuse by close family members as a result of their sexuality or gender identity.
Alarming results showed that almost one in three people (29%) surveyed experienced a range of abuse – from verbal harassment to threats of homelessness and physical violence – by a relative, most often their own parents, with individuals being humiliated, outed or shunned by family because of their sexuality or gender identity.
The practice of conversion therapy can take various forms but often refers to any form of treatment or psychotherapy which aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or to suppress a person’s gender identity, using psychological, physical, or spiritual interventions. It is based on the assumption that being lesbian, gay, bi or trans is a mental illness that can be ‘cured’.
These therapies are widely considered ineffective, unethical and harmful for anyone who undergoes the process.
Galop works directly with thousands of LGBT+ people who have experienced abuse and violence every year, specialising in supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, hate crime, and other forms of abuse including honour-based abuse, forced marriage, and so-called conversion therapies. I'm told that the Prime Minister was shifted by the strength of reaction from Conservative MPs and ministers when they saw the story break.
But he has removed trans conversion therapy from the equation and is insisting any bill must not have 'unintended consequences'.

A ban on conversion therapy that is not trans-inclusive is not a genuine ban at all. Excluding trans people from protection against abusive, harmful conversions is shameful. Trans people will be at risk of exorcisms, beatings, emotional blackmail & psychological brow-beating. pic.twitter.com/ywZLnPyDel
