Landmark ruling in favour of LGBT rights in mostly Muslim Malaysia

A Malaysian Muslim man his 30s has won a challenge in the courts against an Islamic ban on sex which it decrees is ‘against the order of nature’.

Malaysia is a predominantly Islamic country and same sex acts are illegal although convictions were unusual. The LGBT+ community are being increasingly targeted with punishments increasing; jail time and even canings are being sentenced more and more.

Yesterday however, LGBT+ rights were given a shot in the arm when the highest court in the central region of Selangor voted unanimously that the accusation that the man had attempted gay sex was unconstitutional and the authorities did not have the power to enact the law.

It is hoped that the region will immediately repeal the Islamic ban with other regions following soon after.
