Stranger Things 4 has only just finished, breaking records all over the place and thoughts are already turning to the next (and last) series with one character of particular interest…

One of our favourite characters is semi-closeted Robin, played by Maya Hawke, but she’s not the only queer character in the show. Will Byers was the main character in the first season and is fully expected to come full circle and be the focus of the final season.

Will Byers actor, Noah Schnapps, has been making a bit of name for himself on social media and getting into trouble with Doja Cat of all people. She slid into his DMs asking if fellow cast member and standout actor Joseph Quinn was single. Schnapps screen-grabbed the conversation and showed his followers but Doja was NOT happy, calling him a ‘weasel’ on TikTok Love. He has since apologised but has also revealed his hopes for his character in the final season of the show.

Previously he has said that Will’s sexuality was “up to the audience’s interpretation” but any viewers of season 4 will have recognised the internal turmoil of a kid on the brink of coming out. It’s pretty expertly done and Schnapp spilled the T on what’s going on in an interview with Variety.

Schnapp says: “Obviously, it was hinted at in season one: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends? Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100 per cent clear that he is gay and he does love Mike. But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully, because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay.”

The response Will’s character arc has received has been really positive too with Schnapp adding: “I was just in Paris and this, like, 40-year-old man came up to me and he was like, ‘Wow, this Will character made me feel so good. And I related to it so much. That is exactly who I was when I was a kid.’ That just made me so happy to hear.”

We won’t give anything away as Will’s sexuality isn’t really a part of the main plot but there are some scenes that are done so beautifully and the fact that so many young people watch the show is a great sign for queer kids. Schnapp also said that he really hoped Will’s sexuality would be addressed in Stranger Things 5 and if our theory is correct, it looks like he could be the star of the season!

Schnapp said: “There’s so many different things they have to address. Obviously, we hope for a coming-out scene.” So do we!! Here’s the rather epic trailer for Season 4 Part 2 or Stranger Things which is worth a watch for the Kate Bush remix alone!
