The country music sector is huge worldwide but it isn’t really associated with gay culture (Brokeback Mountain aside) with the ethos more geared towards ‘family values.’ Out gay music stars are thin on the ground and even then, they come out later in life.

Step forward T.J. Osborne of the band Brothers Osborne who has just made history to become the first openly gay artist signed to a major country record label. He spoke openly about his sexuality in TIME Magazine interview with his brother John, who fully supports his decision to speak his truth.

T.J has received huge support from his family and fans along with a raft of his celebrity peers. Kasey Musgraves, Reese Witherspoon and Michelle Branch all reached out on Twitter but it was LeeAnn Rimes’ words that seemed the most poignant, writing ‘It’s a brave thing to be wholly you in a world and industry that would rather you hide pieces of you behind a mask.’
