Last night was the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and Ru Paul made history.

Crowns aren’t unfamiliar territory for the Queen of Drag, but last night was pretty special for Ru Paul.

Drag Race picked up the Outstanding Competition Series award for the fourth year in a row and Ru made Emmys history, again, by becoming the most-awarded Black artist by picking up the 11th of his career.

The record was formerly held by Donald A. Morgan, who has 10.

Although Ru didn’t acknowledge the history-making achievement in his speech, he did say:

“Really thanks to all of our lovely children on our show from around the world. You know, they are so gracious to tell their stories of courage and how to navigate this difficult life. Even more difficult today”

The star continued, “This is for you and for you kids out there watching. You have a tribe out there that is waiting for you. We are waiting for you baby! Come to Mama Ru.”

Drag Race has a ridiculously impressive total of 24 Primetime Emmy Awards and shows no signs of slowing down on its path to global domination. Drag Race Season 3 is about to premier in the UK, meanwhile Canada Season 2 is gearing up with some fierce queens ready-to-go and Down Under has been renewed for a second run.

Elsewhere at The Emmys 2021, the cast of Schitt’s Creek – who won big at the ceremony last year – reunited to present the awards for Outstanding Comedy Writing and Outstanding Comedy Directing, which went to Hacks.

The evening saw awards success for Ted Lasso (the big winner of the night), The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown.

Gillian Anderson is now a two-time Emmy winner. The actress went home with the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. This marks the second win for the six-time nominee, who last won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama 24 years for playing agent Dana Scully on The X-Files

Meanwhile it was a disappointing result for Pose and MJ Rodriguez fans, with the actress being snubbed for what would have been a historic win.

Despite Ru’s success on the night, many social media users have criticized the ceremony for handing out gongs to “mainly white” performers this year. What are your thoughts? Drop a comment in the box below!
