Top lawman in Texas now wants to re-criminalise gay sex between men

Well that didn’t take long. Texas’s top lawmaker, attorney-general Ken Paxton, has made clear his intentions to try and re-criminalise male gay sex.

Days after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas set out his plan to reverse everything from gay marriage to contraception (strangely no mention of interracial marriage, which he happens to be in), human rights across the USA have fallen like dominos and we knew it wouldn’t be long before they came for us.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, paving the way for criminalizing safe access to abortion, Justice Thomas flagged that other precedents, including the 2003 ruling Lawrence v Texas, should also be revisited.

That ruling found that laws banning sodomy in the United States were unconstitutional. Read more background on that case by clicking here

Attorney-general Ken Paxton was asked in a recent interview whether he would want to take a sodomy law to the Supreme Court, a notion he didn’t even try to extinguish:

“My job is to defend state law and I’ll continue to do that. That is my job under the Constitution and I’m certainly willing and able to do that”.

“This is all new territory for us so I’d have to know how the Legislature was laid out and whether we thought we could defend. Ultimately, if it’s constitutional, we’re going to go defend it.”

Paxton’s Democratic opponent in November’s election, Rochelle Garza, took to Twitter to express her outrage:

Twitter.

A lot is said about deflection, especially when comes to hypocritical politicians and Paxton safely falls into that category.

Not only has he been a vociferous opponent of same-sex marriage, transgender rights and pandemic safety restrictions, but he was ALSO indicted over criminal securities fraud in 2015, with the case then being repeatedly delayed.

Then, in 2020, SEVEN of his aides accused him of abuse of office, bribery and other crimes. What a peach.
