WATCH: Gay Missouri lawmaker makes impassioned speech about anti-trans law
The Missouri House approved a bill this week allowing school districts to vote on whether to ban trans student athletes from kids sports. Enter out gay representative Ian Mackey, who was not letting Republican Chuck Basye off the hook that easily.
Trans kids are literally fighting for their lives right now in US politics so when Basye, who proposed the amendment, said it was to “save women’s sports”, it was down to Mackey to get personal, asking the Republican about his gay brother and it escalated from there.
Mackey said: “I would have been afraid to tell you too. I would have been afraid to tell you too because of stuff like this, because this is what you’re focused on. This is the legislation you want to put forward. This is what consumes your time… I was afraid of people like you growing up.”
Watch the whole thing below. This is a fight that is not going to be won anytime soon so thank fuck for people like Rep. Ian Mackey.
MO State Rep. Mack (D) confronts Rep. Basye (R) over an anti-trans bill: "I was afraid of people like you… 18 years I walked around with 'nice' people like you who voted for crap like this. Thank God I made it out. I think every day of kids… who haven't escaped this bigotry." pic.twitter.com/53dUBYG5Jb— Heartland Signal (@HeartlandSignal) April 14, 2022
