Labour’s Angela Rayner gives impassioned response to trans caller saying “Transgender women’s rights are women’s rights”

As the Tory leadership contest to become Prime Minister rages on with trans rights at the fore, it’s opposition party Labour’s Deputy Leader who is FINALLY the adult in the room.

Angela Rayner MP has long been an advocate for trans rights having said in the past that ‘trans rights are not in conflict with women’s rights’. Unlike Tory leader hopeful Penny Mordaunt though, she hasn’t tempered her views in order to sate the appetites of gender critics.

Rayner is the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne and is as well as being the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, she is also the Shadow First Secretary of State so it’s pretty major that she is so adamant about her support for the transgender community. She was guest hosting a show on London-centric radio station LBC yesterday and when a 19-year-old trans woman Rebecca called into the show, she did not mince her words.

She said “I’m terrified of checking Twitter because trans people are always trending with people hating us. The question I really want to ask is: is a Labour Government really going to be able to fix that?” Watch Rayners frankly expert response below now:

Clearly the caller Rebecca is distressed by what’s been going on in British (and worldwide) media and politics so Rayner’s answers are a breath of fresh air in what has become a toxic ‘debate’. Ultimately being trans isn’t a ‘debate’ or an ‘issue’, trans rights are HUMAN RIGHTS and thank goodness someone in the upper echelons of the UK parliament isn’t afraid to speak out.
