The pandemic has hit a lot of industries extremely hard but for the live music and theatre sectors, it has been particularly devastating. When a shared musical experience at a premium price is off the table, theatre hubs like the West End in London and Broadway in New York have lain dormant for the best part of a year.

There have been furlough schemes and bail outs but musical theatre especially has suffered enormously considering it’s worth billions to the economy in normal times.

Fans of a show were therefore moved to tears last night watching Musicals: The Greatest Show on BBC 1/BBC Worldwide. With performances from Sheridan Smith, Nicole Sherzinger, Michael Ball and Amanda Holden, viewers were reminded of the power of productions like Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Six and Les Mis and calling for the lights to be switched back on before it’s curtains for good.
