Ariana DeBose has won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress thanks to an incredible performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Ariana identifies as bisexual making her one of only a handful of  out queer winners.

At the same awards, which were presented by Rebel Wilson last night, actress Emma Watson made a remark that was seen as both pro trans and as a jibe to JK Rowling who had spewed more misinformed anti-trans rhetoric that very day. After Wilson jokingly referred to her as a witch, she said ‘I’m here for ALL the witches’ which many people saw as a reference to her ‘trans women are women’ stance.

The big winner of the night was Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog which won her Best Director and Best Film. She wasn’t there to pick it up so Benedict Cumberbatch did the honours despite not winning in his category for the same movie where he plays a repressed sexually ambiguous cowboy.

In the meantime, here’s the trailer for the West Side Story, which is available on Disney+ now and well worth a viewing.
