Biden reiterates his support for trans kids and a record 54 LGBTQ+ candidates run in Texas

Last year, President Joe Biden proved what we knew anyway, that he was an ally to LGBTQ+ Americans in a way his predecessor pretended he did only to be the opposite, surprisingly literally no-one.

Biden has reiterated these sentiments in his first State of the Union address. In a speech that was dominated by the Russia-Ukraine war, he made time to talk about the LGBTQ+ community and especially trans kids who are being used as political collateral in various states in the run up to the mid-term primaries.

Mr Biden said: ‘The onslaught of state laws targeting transgender Americans and their families is wrong. As I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I will always have your back as your President, so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.’

The nature of US politics right now is that if you’re not from the same political party then you are AGAINST whatever they stand for, leaving the Republicans the anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ party.

Things are not all bad however. In Texas, where Governor Abbott has decided that providing gender-affirming care to vulnerable trans kids is to be deemed ‘child abuse’, there is a record 54 out LGBTQ+ candidates running for political nominations in the state primary. Thats double the amount running in 2020.

Annise Parker, former Houston Mayor and president, and CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund said: “I am deeply concerned about the onslaught of attacks on LGBTQ people, and especially trans people, here in Texas. However, I remain optimistic and inspired by the qualified out LGBTQ candidates running to represent our community and stand up against this hate.”

And so it seems LGBTQ+ people in Texas have answered the call. When a group of us is attacked then we are all attacked and we will take it to the ballot box to prove that hate has no place in modern society.
