Gay reviewer makes bitchy remark… Carey Mulligan NOT happy
British actress Carey Mulligan is a bad b and never shy of speaking her mind and this week is no different. After a review went up (over a year ago) of her only just released movie Promising Young Woman in movie bible Variety, she was less than enthused.
So what was Mulligan’s beef with review? Here is the passage that irked her by lauded reviewer Dennis Harvey:
“Margot Robbie is a producer here, and one can (perhaps too easily) imagine the role might once have been intended for her. Whereas with this star, Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on.”
Mulligan, 35, took umbrage at what she took to be a slight on her looks, remarking in December “I felt like it was basically saying that I wasn’t hot enough to pull off this kind of ruse”
The movie, which is directed by The Crown actress Emerald Fennell, is garnering incredible reviews and looks to be the revenge thriller to watch right now. Carey’s issues obviously hit home as she has received an apology from Variety.
Harvey resorbed this week, “I’m a 60-year-old gay man. I don’t actually go around dwelling on the comparative hotnesses of young actresses, let alone writing about that”
Could it be that he was making a bitchy aside only to get caught out? Mentioning his sexuality only fuels that assertion but then aren’t critics allowed to say whatever they want? The jury’s still out.
