Switzerland backs same sex marriage in national referendum

Switzerland has just held a referendum on legalising same sex marriage and it looks like it’s about to pass easily with a majority.

Yes, we were surprised that it wasn’t already legal in Switzerland but there you go! The federal government and parliament had already approved an amended law in favour of gay marriage but the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) forced a referendum on the issue under Switzerland’s ‘system of direct democracy.’

Despite the SVP campaigning against marriage equality, citing the usual ‘traditional family’ and ‘protecting children’ nonsense, it looks like the people of Switzerland have voted by about 64% in favour.

The amended law will make it possible for same-sex couples to get married and to adopt children. Married lesbian couples will also be allowed to have children through sperm donation which is currently only legal for married heterosexual couples.
