This is going to be one hell of a weekend for The Weeknd. Following last year’s epic double whammy of Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – better known as The Weeknd – will be headlining the Super Bowl LV half-time show on Sunday.

You don’t have to be a football fan or even an American to get the significance of this and at 30, he’s one of the youngest headliners ever to grace the stage. With viewing figures in the hundreds of millions, recent years have seen Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry and Beyoncé fill the slot…so no pressure then.

Due to the pandemic, it will be a different kind of show reportedly with no cameo appearances (usually a highlight of the performance) but promises to be no less impressive. The Weeknd explained how the recent bandaged and bloodied look he sported in public was part of a narrative culminating in the video for Save Your Tears where he appears with terrifying prosthetics to highlight the absurdity of having too much plastic surgery.

The Weeknd is the first Canadian to headline the half-time show, beating Justin Bieber and Drake to the accolade, and just released a career retrospective of sorts called The Highlights in time for err, this weekend’s performance.
