Themyscira, the island home of Wonder Woman, officially welcomed its first known trans Amazon.

Making DC Universe history, Bia, a Black trans woman, was introduced in the latest issue of Nubia & The Amazons #1

The story begins with a flashback to Nubia’s arrival on Themiscyra thorough the ‘Well of Souls’: a portal through which women who have died as a result of male violence, from “Man’s World”, are reborn and given new life among the immortal women.

Subsequently, their memories of their previous lives are erased and they present themselves with their decided new name at the Royal Palace.

Bea says: “I don’t know how to explain it yet, but this exact moment feels like my soul has desired it long before I came here. I AM BIA!”

On Twitter, Nubia & The Amazons writers Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala confirmed the subtext, saying: “If you’ve read Nubia & The Amazon #1. The answer to your burning question is yes. There are trans Amazons,” Williams wrote. “One of the newest Amazons is a Black trans woman.”

“she isn’t a box to tick, she is a fully fledged character that is important to her community. Just as Black trans women are important to us in real life”, the writer continued.

Vita added: “We are glad people picked up on it, but if y’all hadn’t we would have made sure to say it so it wasn’t hand-twaveable subtext.”

DC Comics are bringing it with LGBT+ representation of late, recently announcing a Bisexual superman
