Seattle Pride kicks Amazon out as sponsor due to donations to anti-LGBTQ+ politicians
Seattle Pride has booted Amazon as the sponsor of their parade due to a $450k donation to lawmakers who voted against the Equality Act last year and thereby stalling it. Amazon had donated $100k to the event and even wanted the name changed to “Seattle Pride Parade Presented by Amazon.”
Pride organisers said of the change: “Seattle Pride has decided to not partner with Amazon for the 2022 Seattle Pride Parade because of their financial donations to politicians who actively propose and support anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation, oppose pro-LGBTQIA+ and other human rights legislation, and for allowing anti-LGBTQIA+ organizations to raise funds from their AmazonSmile program.”
Obviously Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world so offsets taxation by charitable donations but they had previously come out in support of the Equality Act, so how did the end up happening?
A spokesperson for Amazon said: “Amazon engages with policymakers and regulators on a wide range of issues that affect our business, customers, and employees. That does not mean we agree with any individual or political organization 100 percent of the time on every issue, and this includes legislation that discriminates or encourages discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.”
Well maybe somebody somewhere in the bowels of amazon HQ should have checked this out. It’s almost as if its not about the donation at all but more to do with being seen to be progressive. Hmmmm.
