Jessica Chastain takes Rev Steve Pieters as date to Oscars lunch (you’ll weep when you know who he is)
Jessica Chastain was nominated for an Oscar this year for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker, the televangelist who was shunned for showing compassion during the AIDS crisis.
In a show of true solidarity, she took Rev Steve Pieters as her date to the official Oscars luncheon this week, the man who Tammy Faye originally interviewed on her show Tammy’s House Party on the Praise the Lord network about living with HIV/AIDS back in the 80s.
The scene is depicted in the the movie The Eyes of Tammy Faye (also starring Andrew Garfield) which was a moderate hit back in September 2021 but it was a passion project for Chastain after seeing the acclaimed documentary of the same name, itself narrated by RuPaul.
Chastain spoke about the scene with Pieters to NBC News back when the movie was released, saying: “For me, that interview was the reason I had to make the film; it was the most important scene. I’m convinced they saved lives with that interview, because many in the conservative evangelical world were disowning their children who were coming out to them.”
You can catch the original documentary on WOW Presents Plus but check your favourite streaming services for ways to see the movie.
