JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson make history for Dancing with the Stars USA as first same-sex pair
Fu*king iconic representation.
JoJo Siwa made some US television history on Monday night, along with dancing partner Jenna Johnson, by becoming USA Dancing with the Stars’ first same-sex pairing.
DWTS has formerly seen same-sex pairings on the Israel, Italy, Denmark, France, Ireland and Australia branches of the franchise, to name a few, but this is a first for the US arm.
Talking about her decision to join the hit show, the star, who came out back in January, said: “For the first time in Dancing with the Stars history, I am dancing with another female, and I’m really, really proud.”
The Nickelodeon star continued: “I came out in early 2021 and what I love to do is make truly being who you are easier for kids.”
Speaking about her dance partner, Jojo said: ‘Jenna is the absolute coolest. And I think one of the most talented dancers on Dancing With the Stars.’
Johnson excitedly remarked, ‘Oh, my goodness. You and I will be the first same-sex dance partners on Dancing with the Stars,’ with Siwa adding, ‘We’re going to be inspiring for people that come after us.’
Their first dance of the season was to Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ (amazing) and after dancing the foxtrot, Siwa and Johnson bagged the highest score of the night, with a 29 out of 40 result.
Meanwhile, over in the UK, former Bake Off winner John Whaite is currently starring as part of the first male same-sex pairing in the UK shows’ history.
All these baby steps… all history making change. We LOVE to see it.
Dancing With the Stars continues its 30th Season in the US on Monday, September 27 at 8 PM ET on ABC.
