Lizzo addresses losing Little Mermaid part to Melissa McCarthy
Lizzo has revealed the exchange she had with Melissa McCarthy when they met at an event having both auditioned for the role of Ursula the Sea Witch in the forthcoming Disney live action The Little Mermaid, with McCarthy ultimately winning the part.
In recent interview, Lizzo said of meeting McCarthy: “She was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa,’ and I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Melissa. And I also auditioned for Ursula.’ And she was like, ‘Well why the hell did I get the part?’ which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say.”
On fine form as always, Lizzo said that at the time she told McCarthy that her audition for The Little Mermaid was ‘terrible’ just as actor Tyler Perry walked past, which “ruined [her] chances” with him. She did alos explain that she was only joking, saying: “My audition wasn’t terrible. Sometimes I like to make jokes. My audition was good. You can ask Disney. I don’t want to talk too much about it. The singing was great. I’ll just say that.”
Hmm perhaps she means that her acting might not have been up to scratch. Either way, we shall see what MCarthy does with the role when the Disney remake is released on May 26, 2023. It stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King is playing heartthrob Prince Eric, Javier Bardem is King Triton and Daveed Diggs will be portraying Sebastian the crab. Phew!
