Hillary Clinton calls for Brittney Griner’s release as Russian detention extended to May
Brittney Griner, possibly the best women’s basketball player in the world, is currently being held on drugs charges in Russia in a very precarious position as the war rages on in Ukraine and the US impose crippling sanctions on Putin’s regime.
The 31-year-old had landed at the Sheremetyevo airport, outside Moscow, where she was due to play a season with a Russian league. She was spotted at customs and then disappeared until a mug shot appeared on Russian state television last week.
Along with Hillary Clinton and various other politicians, Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, has called for Brittney’s release as well as privacy as negotiations around her release continue. The U.S. State Department had already warned U.S. citizens not to travel to Russia and for those in the country to leave immediately.
Sports journalist Tamryn Spruill, highlighted the gender discrepancies of the whole situation saying: “If this was an NBA player of her calibre… this would be on the cover of not only every sports page but every news media page in the world”
