Amazon Studios Voices: Pride virtual event to take place on June 24
As Pride month continues, there’s been good news from around the world…and sad – disappointingly.
Visibility this year seems to be amped right up and while that’s obviously a good thing, the current political landscape has emboldened those that may wish us harm to take action of their own or, which is far more common, to comment along the line lines of ‘I’m not anti-LGBT but does it have to be pushed in our face the whole time?’ Yes, yes it does.
Corporations are stepping up in a big way this year, with varying degrees of success. The key takeaway though is that they are learning that it’s more than just putting up a cursory rainbow logo, they have to really show that they are doing something positive.
Step forward Amazon Studios who have come on in leaps and bounds as the streaming wing of the world-conquering behemoth Amazon. With some great shows coming out of their hallowed halls they have now partnered with GLAAD and Pride Media for Amazon Studios Voices: Pride, a virtual event consisting of three roundtable conversations and three ‘lightning talks from LGBTQIA+ players across the industry’. This will include a panel about the forthcoming move version of musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (which hits Amazon Prime Video exclusively on September 17)
Queer media is big business these days and as representation increases, so does resistance. When people feel cornered, they lash out and use the nearest scapegoat for their own woes. This virtual event brings a mixture from the serious to the sublime, closing with performances from RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Kandy Muse, LaLa Ri and Manila Luzon.
