All hail Mj Rodriguez who was become the FIRST trans woman to win Best Actress at the Golden Globes in a muted, private ceremony last night.

The beleaguered Golden Globes at last got something right and has given Rodriguez the coveted award for her work on Pose and it is WELL deserved.

Despite the ceremony being scaled back to such an extent that it wasn’t even shown on TV, Mj celebrated online and you can see her reaction below. She had this to say online about her win:

“OMG OMGGG! [Golden Globes] Wow! You talking about sickening birthday present! Thank you! This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS.”

Of course this is a massive win for representation when we are at a crossroads in the culture wars with trans rights inexplicably front and centre being used as a political weapon by the far right. Mj continued writing:

“To my young LGBTQAI babies WE ARE HERE the door is now open now reach the stars!!!!! To the nominees, we are Queens. I’m so happy to share space with you! Each and every last one of you women are phenomenal.”

As for the Golden Globes themselves, even Ricky Gervais who has presented the live show five times called into doubt their very existence. A few years ago it was discovered that of the entire judging body, there hadn’t been a single person of colour for decades leading to huge stars like Tom Cruise giving back his awards in protest and NBC dropping the live broadcast.

Once seen as a precursor to the Oscars, the pandemic has also meant that the awards haven’t been shown in anything like their former glory for two years now. Whether they will continue to be relevant and in what capacity remains to be seen but in the mean time a huge congrats to Mj!! WELL deserved.
